World Environment Day and Matariki: Honouring the Earth and Our Connection to It
Every year on June 5th, the world comes together to observe World Environment Day, a global initiative led by the United Nations to raise awareness and inspire action to protect our environment. It’s a day that reminds us all of the vital role nature plays in our lives—from the air we breathe to the food we eat—and the urgent need to preserve our planet for future generations.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, this global message finds a powerful echo in the celebration of Matariki, the Māori New Year. Occurring in mid-winter, usually in late June or early July, Matariki marks the rising of the Matariki star cluster (also known as the Pleiades). It is a time of reflection, remembrance, renewal, and connection to the natural world.
Both World Environment Day and Matariki share a deep respect for Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) and encourage us to live in harmony with nature. Matariki invites us to pause and give thanks for the harvest and the land that sustains us, while looking ahead with hope and intention. Similarly, World Environment Day urges us to protect and regenerate our environment, recognising that our well-being is intimately tied to the health of the planet.
Together, these two occasions offer a unique opportunity to reflect on our environmental responsibilities through both global and local lenses. They encourage us to take action –not just on one day, but as a lifelong commitment to kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of our natural world.
As we approach Matariki and celebrate World Environment Day, let us honour the Earth, remember those who came before us, and make choices today that support a sustainable and thriving future for all.
